Mark
is a drummer ever attempting to push the limits of
the drum set. Having an aggressive, yet controlled
approach to playing, Mark has specialised in double
pedal playing.
Based
on a mix of Jazz and Metal, (a musical, relevant,
melodic approach, coupled with an aggressive edge
and incorporation of blistering footwork and hand
chops).
Best
known at this time for his blistering and innovative
drum work with Throne of Nails, encompassing
twisting odd time signatures and highly evolved
double pedal work, and a melodic, orchestral
approach to the kit. He is also a respected and in
demand teacher and local clinician who continually
seeks new, cutting edge techniques.
Starting
the drums at the relatively late age of sixteen,
Mark played in several local bands until in 1993 he
joined Domination, a London based Death Metal band,
who proceeded to blow a sizeable hole in the London
scene, setting a high standard of musicianship and
live performance.
Domination
split in ’95, when Mark left to attend Musicians
Institute, London, where under the guidance of such
luminaries as Thomas Lang, probably the single
biggest influence on Mark's playing.
Mark
then entered a period of intensive study, completely
dedicating himself to the drums with long daily
practice routines in order to attain a greater
mastery over the instrument.
It
was at the Institute that Mark met Matt Henderson
and together they formed Throne of Nails, with the
intent of producing a new kind of Death Metal, that
blurred the often constricting borders and
restrictions of the genre, to push the technical and
stylistic limits, utilising odd signatures and an
orchestrated approach to the music.
Many
line-up changes later, the band signed to Pavement
music for their debut release, Acts of War. The
album received rave reviews, and Marks drumming was
singled out time and time again, in live performance
and on record, as being leagues ahead of the
competition. Particularly his musical interpretation
and double bass work, which receives continued
praise.
Mark
is now branching out from the metal genre, and is
currently studying the new Vruk pedal and hand
techniques to further increase his mastery of the
drum kit. His current projects include clinic and
master class teaching, to promote the techniques
that he is currently developing, and to expose
others to this new method of playing.
